Zocchi, Wargames West Announce Closings

The end of 2001 brought news that two major game distributors - Zocchi Distributors, Holly Springs, Miss., and Wargames West, Albuquerque, N.M. - would not be around for 2002.

Zocchi, founded in Biloxi, Miss., by Lou Zocchi in 1975 and bought by Mike Hurdle in 1997, announced it was planning to file for Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy and that its assets had been seized by the Bank of Holly Springs on Nov. 20.

...

Wargames West was an entirely different story.

According to Faith Price, manager of sales and marketing, owner Wayne Godfrey, who has been in the industry more than 20 years, "looked around at the face of the changing industry and he decided it was time for him to move on and do other things.

Price, who joined Wargames West five years ago, attributed a "hard environment" for game distributors as another reason for closing, which affects 25 employees.

Price says the firm's headquarters in Albuquerque and a warehouse in Memphis were expected to close in the first quarter. Shipping to the hobby industry was to cease at the end of 2001. Price says Godfrey started Wargames West as an Albuquerque game store in the late 1970s and started the distribution business shortly afterward. He sold the store to Glenn Goddard in 1994.
